My name is Yordanos, the Leader & Co-ordinator of Vulnerable Street Kids (VSK) was very aware “as a fourteen year old living in Eritrea. I remember a young child knocking on our gate begging for food as early as 11.a.m. She was accompanied by a mother and two younger children clinging to her. They had few belongings, had no shelter, no food and no relatives to care for them. I was so moved I gave her a plate of “left over” food but wanted to do far more. I prayed to God, that when I grew up I would be in a situation to really help people such as this child. This vision has stayed with me.
I want to be able to help with food, shelter, clothes and showers- to give hope and a future. To support children in their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development. Children have the right to enjoy their childhood.
The Founder of my church was talking about how to help the poor under the ministry, as we were talking, I told him that God gave me the Vision to VSK and he said that I was looking for a person who has a burden to run this project under our RFMI.
In a recent visit to Ethiopia, I was reminded of this vision when I heard a phone call from a couple, soon to die from HIV, who was leaving two beautiful children with no family to look after them. I am a member of RHEMA Faith Ministries in the UK and they are sending me to serve children such as these in Ethiopia. I will be going with the SALT programme from the Church Mission Society (CMS).
I went out to Ethiopia in April 2010 to begin the process of establishing contacts and finding out how realistic the project was. I was able to set up a team of volunteers who will work with me.
I have access to some space within our church building in Addis Ababa and will be setting up a charity shop where I can sell clothes to local poor people. I made contact with Government officials and researched local laws. I would like to begin to organise some fostering of street children. It would be so good to give these children the chance to grow up in a loving and caring environment. They might then become responsible citizens and hopefully, in the future, great Religious leaders.
VSK project aims :
- To support children in their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development
- Give them the chance to grow in a loving and caring environment
- Encourage children to enjoy their childhood
- Help raise responsible citizens and hopefully great future Religious leaders
